It is in the shadow of this towering stone that the lonely Bracken by chance meets Rebecca, daughter of Mandrake. We have traveled to places such as Stonehenge and danced for the moles and left offerings of bread and milk to symbolize the Earth Goddess of nature and her love for us all.

Unlike Tolkien, who wrote one best trilogy to make all others superfluous, author William Horwood has also written many other books about different subjects which are also very worth while. Thank you for being my saviour Mr Harwood and to the many heroic moles that were lost during my reading of these novels.First of all, even if Horwood does not consider this his magnum opus, certainly he put his heart and soul into it.

On reading this for the first time, it seemed to have been inspired by the popularity of Watership Down by Richard Adams. Would Hurt a Child: Rune has no hesitance to kill Bracken's pups to further his cause in which he blames it on Mandrake to get him deposed; worst of all, he kills them right in front of their sister, whom he spares, leaving her traumatized no doubt for life, knowing she was too frightened to convey the whole story, which only made his plan succeed all the more impressively. Another favourite is the Brothers Karamazou, also translated as The Karamazov Brothers written by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

Action Girl: Rebecca, who right from start is described as being "too big for a female", and is as capable of bringing bad guys down as she is of having emotional dilemmas. It is really more of an epic than a novel, spanning many generations and more than a mole's lifetime, which, apparently, is about five human years. From the point of view of Siabod, the foreign language could well be "English" as spoken by the foreign moles. Many of the animals speak, etc, and the novel, while not as pastoral and idyllic as Duncton, is a quiet classic all on its own.
