About this deal

I had seen Alien and that Blade Runner was also directed by Ridley Scott was part of the pitch my dad made in getting me to watch something I'd never heard of. been spiffed up in terms of its visual effects and other slight digital tweaks, there are segments of these three other versions that suffer slightly by comparison. The intensity really is just staggering at times, especially with the shots of the external city streets.

One is simply that adding HDR - and quite aggressive HDR at that - to a relatively old film that wasn’t designed for it can bring out noise that was scarcely be noticeable at ‘SDR’ light levels. Blade Runner stands alongside Alien as one of Ridley Scott’s best films, and this 4K Blu-ray release is a fitting representation of his vision.Ridley Scott's Blade Runner is such an important piece of film history, that it almost speaks for itself whenever being mentioned. Despite having Harrison Ford in the lead role, his Deckard is subdued and unsympathetic, a cynical character who lives a lonely existence. So what are the differences between 'The Complete Collector's Edition' and 'The Ultimate Collector's Edition'? Just occasionally a particular sound or a voice within an especially complex audio environment can sound rather thin and compressed - like you might expect it to sound with such an old source track.

That is a goof up that should be fixed for all retail copies come release day so the average consumer will only get the 4K disc, The Final Cut Blu-ray, and Disc 2 and Disc 4 of the 2007 set. Dick, I was fascinated by the discussion of the changes made to the original short story, as well as the producers' recollections of the arduous journey the film took throughout its production. Every aspect of the film's production is well covered here with a huge number of commentaries, documentaries and featurettes. As you’d hope with such a definitive anniversary release, the extra features are extensive and, for the most part, brilliant. The combination of HDR and wider colors also makes the film feel like it was made just yesterday, rather than 35 years ago.

The narration and happy ending are still gone and the unicorn scene remains (though now it uses better footage recently unearthed from studio vaults). And since I didn't have it in my sci-fi and fantasy collection, I do it now (along with space odyssey 2001). While some criticize the film for being visually indulgent, style over substance, I would counter that those people just aren't really and honestly looking at the film.

So all I’ll say here is that it’s simply one of the greatest - and best looking - sci-fi films ever made; a stunning and remarkably timeless reminder of just what a visionary director Sir Ridley Scott was back in his relative youth.I haven't seen the UHD but I have seen the theatrical release of the film on standard blu-ray and it's a really nice transfer. Put the disc in the player and it autoplays the film and you may have to escape to the main menu to ensure that your audio choice is selected. This phenomenal Blade Runner set from Warner on Blu-ray sets the new standard for comprehensive special editions.

It's a remarkable accomplishment and the film's effects still pack an intensely realistic punch to this day. Given the circumstances of watching two of the greatest science-fiction films back to back at such a young age, my little 10-year-old brain was suitably blown. As 'The Final Cut' forms the centerpiece of the package, I'll focus on that presentation, and then offer some additional thoughts on the other versions. It contains never-before-seen added/extended scenes, added lines, new and improved special effects, director and filmmaker commentary, an all-new 5. The 4K disc carries no less than three separate audio commentary tracks: one by Ridley Scott, one by crew members Syd Mead, Lawrence G. In keeping with the high video standards employed on this Blu-ray release, Warner has opted to include a full 5.
