About this deal

Here are some of our more lighthearted things to show we're not all about the Serious Business of games. Isle of Skye will suit anyone looking for a short to medium length game that gives you something to think about.

It always puts the players in a situation that requires unique decision-making processes like no other game has. Going first means you have the most choice but you don’t know which of your tiles you will be left with.

If you have a tile that would be too valuable in another player’s island then you can simply discard it. More than whether a scoring condition is in the game, when a scoring condition triggers also has a huge impact on the game. There is a simple catch-up mechanic in the last three rounds, where trailing players receive a cash boost. Isle of Skye is a tile laying game with an auction mechanic which pits you against your opposing players to see who will finish the game with the most victory points and take the step from chieftain to king.

Player's scoring markers are made out of wood and the cloth bag supplied with the game is 100% cotton. The escalation of the economy gives a sense of engine building not present in most tile layers, and the auction gives a high sense of tension and bluff. So then you might try to play for each rounds scoring round by round, or prepare for a big score in one round hoping that others won’t outscore across the others (or that you will not have to pay too much for the tiles you need! Hardcore gamers may find it too light and with a lack of challenge but it doesn’t stop Isle of Skye being a great warm up game preparing you for something a bit heavier. And I wouldn’t be surprised if, with continued plays, it becomes enthroned in my top ten games of all time.

This review is primarily meant to be about the value of the Big Box, but I can’t really do that without talking briefly about the original game. I’m Scottish (you may have noticed) and this misty eyed romanticism of my homeland is not new to me. Lastly, this expansion cleverly avoids disrupting the in-game economy, which has a very specific growth curve that is actually quite central to the gameplay. Scrolls provide end-game points, and if you can completely enclose an area (as the meadow here), the scrolls score double. The rules are simple and can be explained in three minutes or less, yet there is lots of room for tense decisions and clever play.In the end, the player with the best kingdom—and not the richest player—becomes the sovereign of the island.
