About this deal

Birds represents the best of LEGO Ideas, and despite lacking the star-studded draw of licensed creations, is shaping up to be one of the top sets this year even if it’s only January. I don’t watch or particularly care about Doctor Who, so I’ll wait till I see the final product before deciding to get it!

s first LEGO Ideas set, LEGO Birds showed up on my doorstep late last week and I couldn’t wait to tear into the set. If you like Super Heroes or grand buildings, this set might not feel like it contains a lot of value. It has its flaws like any other set: the grey Technic axle used between the Robin and tree branch, black pieces used instead of ‘Earth Blue' for the Blue Jay and the loose ‘Earth Green' pieces of the Hummingbird. Attached to the base is also a printed tile with the scientific name of each bird, which I think is a cool little touch. This set also includes 3 booklets containing lots more information about each of these fascinating species as well as the creator of these amazing models. My wife occasionally enjoys building my LEGO sets with me, so it was really good to be able to split up the birds between us and build simultaneously. LEGO®is a trademark of the LEGO Group of companies which does not sponsor, authorize or endorse this site. It certainly is a great channel for LEGO to test the waters and experiment with new themes and Ideas (heh) at a relatively low cost, compared to an investment that a full fledged theme requires. The flowers and leaves can be repositioned, allowing you to style the plant and create your own display, and there are even a few surprises if you look carefully enough – do you see the little purple LEGO swords used to make the flower’s stamens?

I have to say it again, the colours used to construct the Blue Jay are the unsung heroes of the entire model and really pulls everything together in a visually pleasing fashion. As an AFOL, most of my sets end up on display so I would definitely be lining up for more sets like this. Over that last few years Birds has been a particularly good investment for Ideas collectors with an annualized growth of upwards of 10. Created by keen gardener and bird enthusiast Thomas Poulsom and selected by LEGO Ideas members, each replica bird hails from a different continent: the Robin from Europe; the Blue Jay from North America; and the Hummingbird from South America. The use of a clear piece to prop up the Hummingbird is a really nice touch as well as it makes it seem like the Hummingbird is buzzing around unsupported by anything. When the first photos from Tom Poulsom’s Birds sets appeared, I immediately knew that this set would be something special.

Yes LEGO have to use as many simple and primary colours in the internal structure of any model to make it easier for the builder to find the pieces when constructing a set. Ideas is a tricky platform, obviously sets that look impressive but have an unrealistic vote count will hit 10000 votes, due to the media coverage and attention it receives. If you stare at it close enough, it creates a sort of optical illusion that makes the wings look like they’re beating rapidly, which I think is quite a genius design. Unlike the criticism I leveled the Robin for having a very rectangular shaped tail, it doesn’t seem to affect the Blue Jay as much thanks to a clever combination of the stripes and narrow tail which gives it much more definition than the Robin’s plain brown tail. Not too worry, as you probably would’ve guessed, I’m VERY particular about content on my blog and I have the highest of standards for stuff I publish. Put down your binoculars and get closer to nature with these intricate LEGO® models of well-known birds! After all, this is YOUR baby and unless you’re happy with the blog swerving about in it’s writing style, content, topics etc, it’s definitely going to need the reigns firmly in place.
